Search Madison County Court Records
The main online source for Madison County Circuit Court and District Court cases is Alacourt ACCESS, also called Just One Look. This official Alabama trial-court portal covers criminal, civil, small claims, state traffic, domestic relations, and child support cases. It offers searches by a party's name or an assigned case number. It is paid access, not a free countywide index. Each name or case-number search costs $9.99, and a no-match result still counts as a search. A case detail report can show court actions, case status, settings, parties, financial history, and the detailed action summary.
First identify the custodian. Circuit and District Court files belong with the Circuit Clerk. Probate files, marriage certificates, land records, and historic archives belong with Probate Court. Madison or Huntsville city citations may remain in the city municipal court. Federal cases use PACER, not Alacourt. This routing step prevents paying for a state trial-court search that cannot return the desired record.

Criminal files follow a case from the filed accusation through pleas, motions, hearings, disposition, and sentence. They may include warrants, complaints or indictments, bond information, discovery orders, fines, costs, and probation events. The complete case file differs from a jail booking. Madison County Probate Court separately maintains estates, wills, guardianships, conservatorships, recorded land documents, marriage certificates, and archives.

What Madison County Court Records Show
A case record is both an identity file and an event log. Madison County examples use a county prefix and case-type code. Public garnishment notices show numbers such as 47-SM-2022-000096.00 and 47-CV-2018-902330.00. The observed prefix 47 identifies Madison County, while codes such as SM, DV, and CV distinguish case types. Always read the entire number because similar party names can appear in unrelated proceedings.

Madison County Public Court Access
Alabama Code section 36-12-40 establishes a general right to inspect and copy public writings unless another law provides otherwise. Court access also follows Alabama judicial privacy and confidentiality rules. The official custodian remains the best starting point: the Circuit Clerk for Circuit and District cases, Probate Court for probate and land material, and the appropriate municipal clerk for city matters.
The public right does not make every page of every file open. Social Security numbers, complete financial account numbers, minor identifiers, medical facts, and protected addresses may be removed from an otherwise public record. Certification also differs from viewing. A paid online image may be useful for research, while a court, agency, or legal transaction may require a certified copy issued by the clerk.

Restricted Madison County Court Records
Juvenile court records are confidential under Alabama law and are not ordinary public case files. Access may be limited to the child, parents or guardians, counsel, prosecutors, agencies, schools, or people authorized by statute or court order. Adoption and many mental-health records also carry strong restrictions. Sensitive family filings may be sealed in whole or redacted in part.
Expungement can remove an eligible criminal, traffic, violation, or municipal record from normal public access. Sealing is different: the court keeps control of the file while blocking public inspection unless legal authority or a later order permits it. Court staff can provide forms and process information but cannot decide whether someone qualifies or give legal advice.

Request Madison County Court Records
The Circuit Clerk records-request process is the fallback for missing online material, older files, and copies that need clerk handling. Submit one completed request form for each party with payment. Family and domestic requests go to the Family Court Division. District civil, small claims, criminal, and traffic requests go to the District Court Division. Mail requests accept money orders or cashier's checks payable to Debra Kizer, Circuit Clerk; personal checks are not accepted. Cash may be used in person. The official page does not publish a processing time or a complete copy-fee table.

Probate requests should not be sent to this office. Probate Court accepts appointments made at least one business day ahead and may send records electronically or by mail after contact at probate@madisoncountyal.gov or 256-532-3330. Municipal records stay with the city court that handled the citation or ordinance matter.
The clerk divides work among civil, criminal, domestic, child support, traffic, juvenile, and warrants divisions, so the case type should appear on a mailed request. Pro se users who want electronic orders may register through AlaFile, print the registration form, and bring it to the Clerk's Office with state-issued photo identification for identity processing. That e-notice route can send later electronic orders by email, but it does not replace a records request for an existing file.
Keep a copy of the submitted form and payment record.
Federal Court Records Near Madison County
Federal matters are outside the Madison County Circuit Clerk's files. Civil and criminal cases in the Northern District of Alabama use the federal court system and PACER. Bankruptcy cases use the separate U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Alabama. Federal docket searches should not be confused with Alabama trial-court searches, and a federal case number will not produce a Madison County Alacourt result.
